My brother got me the Rumpl Backcountry Puffy Blanket for Christmas, and it sat around unopened for a while. Not for lack of interest. The Rumpl brand has been part of my life for about 10 years at this point. I’ve had a smaller Rumpl kicking around in my van since way back when I grabbed one as a promo item, and the thing just keeps going. Machine washable, durable, takes the kind of beating that comes with living out of a vehicle. So going into this one, I already had a baseline for what the brand is capable of.
When I finally pulled it out of its tube, the first thing that hits you is how much blanket is packed into that thing. It rolls up tight into a cylinder you can carry one-handed. For me, that’s a real selling point. Van camping means you’re always negotiating for space, and a full-size blanket that compresses that small without losing function is exactly what I want rattling around in my gear. Rumpl tosses around terms like “thermal lift” and “super compression insulation” in their marketing copy. Normally I’d side-eye that kind of language. But when you’ve got 10 years of their products to back it up, those words carry a little more weight.
What You’re Getting
The Backcountry Puffy looks thin when you unfold it. That’s going to be your first reaction and it’s fair. But thin and warm is what Rumpl does, and they’ve been doing it well for a long time.
The build is clean. Corner ties keep the blanket anchored when it’s draped over a camp chair or wrapped around you. There’s a zipper pocket for your phone, keys, or whatever else you want to keep close. Along the edges are what they call cape clips — rubber clips that let you either connect this to a second blanket or button it around yourself so you can wear it hands-free without it sliding off every thirty seconds. If you’ve ever tried to stay bundled up while doing camp chores, you know exactly why that feature exists.
The first thing I did after opening it was wrap it around myself outside to film the video. No fire, no heater, just sitting in the yard. It warmed up fast. Noticeably so. That’s an early impression and not a full season of field use, but it lines up with everything I already know about how this brand builds its insulation. The little Rumpl that’s been living in my van for close to a decade still holds up, still washes clean, still does its job. That track record matters here.
Machine washable across the board, which is how outdoor gear should always work. Get it dirty, throw it in the wash, move on.
One small thing worth mentioning: the packaging reads “Made for whatever unfolds” right on the lid. You open the lid. The blanket unfolds. It’s a little moment, but whoever came up with that deserves a nod.
The Verdict
The Rumpl Backcountry Puffy Blanket is a solid buy. I’ve trusted this brand for about 10 years and nothing about this one gives me any reason to change that. Packs down small, heats up fast, cape clips are genuinely useful, and it’s machine washable. If you’re a van camper, an overlander, or just someone who wants a real blanket for real use around camp, this is where I’d send you. Don’t hesitate.
